The characters specifying the year are “明治三年”, literaly “3rd year of Meiji era”. Since the emperor Mutsuhito ascended the throne in 1867, this means 1870 in our calendar. If your coin is near mint, you can probably sell it within $500 – $800 USD, depending of its eye appeal.

On the dragon side of the coin the left stroke of this 圆 character is too short – so I am assuming it is a type one. Which character specifies the year? I I believe it is the 1870 but I would like to be sure. And could you tell me what a near mint coin like this could be worth? Thank you so much for your wonderful article!!!
